You Are Purposed For The Presence of God

For the Israelites, life revolved around the Presence of God, literally.

During the Exodus from Egypt while they were in the wilderness, Moses would meet with God face-to-face. This would occur outside of the camp at a place called, the “Tent of Meeting.” (What an appropriate name for a place to “meet” with God). Whenever Moses would meet with God, all the people of Israel would stop everything they were doing and worship!

When all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, all the people would arise and worship, each at the entrance of his tent. – Exodus 33:10 (NASB)

Nothing is more important than when He personally comes to meet us face-to-face as you would with a friend. These “meetings“ with God are not just for the anointed man or woman, but they are for everybody! In Acts 2:17 it says, ”… in the latter days He will pour out His Spirit on all flesh.” This means every man, woman, and child from every nation on the earth can participate in meeting with God through the Holy Spirit by their faith in Jesus. When God comes to your town, or to your house, stop everything you’re doing, set your gaze on Him, and worship!

After many years in the wilderness, the Tent of Meeting was no longer placed outside of the camp. All twelve tribes were stationed around the Tent of Meeting: four tribes to the north, four to the south, four to the east, and four to the west, with the Tent located in the center of the camp.

The sons of Israel shall camp, each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers households; they shall camp around the tent of meeting at a distance. – Numbers 2:2 (NASB)

Presence Centered Lives

No longer was the Tent of Meeting at a distance outside the camp, but rather it was smack in the middle of it. So, do you see what I mean how life revolved around the ‘Presence of God?’ His Presence was literally the center of their lives. The Tent of Meeting was a daily reminder of God in their midst. Whenever God would come down in a pillar of cloud, He would show His faithfulness to the Israelites. He is always with them. He will never leave them.

In Exodus 33, Moses desperately intercedes for the people of Israel. God faithfully responds to his prayer by saying, “My Presence shall go with you, and I will give you rest.” But the verse immediately following is what stands out to me:

Then he said to Him, ‘If Your Presence does not go with us, do not lead us up from here. For how then can it be known that I have found favor in Your sight, I and Your people? Is it not by Your going with us, so that we, I and Your people, may be distinguished from all the other people who are upon the face of the earth? – Exodus 33:15–16 (NASB)

No Presence = No Purpose

Can you hear the desperation in Moses’ prayer?

This is for us too! We don’t want to take another step without His Presence – It’s not only the purpose of ministry, but it’s the very essence of our lives. How will we be distinguished from the rest of the world if it is not God’s Presence within us? We must become a people revolving around the Presence of God.
